THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST CHARACTERS
John “Jack” Worthing, J.P., aka Ernest, 20’s/30’s
Wealthy young gentleman who takes life seriously. A friend of Algernon whose behavior he sometimes deplores. John is Cecily’s guardian and in love with Gwendolen.
Algernon Moncrieff, 20’s/30’s
Brilliantly witty and blithely selfish nephew of Lady Bracknell and cousin to Gwendolen. Ernest’s (John/Jack’s) best friend and in love with Cecily Cardew.
Gwendolen Fairfax, early 20’s
Algernon’s young, aristocratic and charmingly superficial cousin & Lady Bracknell’s daughter. In love with John/Jack/Ernest.
Lady Bracknell, 55 +
Domineering, cunning, snobbish mercenary. Gwendolen’s mother, and means to see her daughter well-married.
Cecily Cardew, early 20’s
Given to romantic fantasies and intrigued by the wickedness of Jack’s brother. She is a simple, innocent country girl.
Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D. (Doctor of Divinity), 55 +
Pleasant rector on John/Jack’s estate and fancies Miss Prism.
Miss Prism, 50 +
Cecily’s pedantic governess. Somewhat puritanical, but her softer side leans toward Dr. Chasuble.
Merriman, 30 – 50’s – Butler at Jack’s country estate.
Lane, 30 – 40’s Algernon’s manservant.
